First-class guide

First Muay Thai class

Here is what to wear, what to bring, and what to tell the coach when you arrive.

Before leaving

Keep it simple.

Wear comfortable sports clothes and bring a water bottle. Gloves, hand wraps and shin guards are free to borrow at the gym, so there is nothing to buy before you come.

01

Comfortable clothing

Choose sports clothes that allow you to move, kick, and sweat comfortably.

02

A water bottle

There is a free refill station at the gym, so bring a bottle rather than two hours' worth of water.

03

Your context

Tell the coach that you are new, returning after a break, or managing an injury.

04

Nothing else

Gloves, hand wraps and shin guards are free to borrow, in adult and kids' sizes, with no deposit and no ID.

During class

What usually happens.

Every class is a little different, but this gives you a good idea of what to expect.

01

Arrive and introduce yourself

Say it is your first time and mention any relevant injury or limitation.

02

Warm up

Prepare your body and learn the pace of the room.

03

Learn technique

Work on stance, guard, movement, and strikes with clear feedback.

04

Practise

Use pads or bags and manage the effort rather than chasing someone else's intensity.

05

Cool down and ask

Finish the session, recover, and clarify the next thing to work on.

Your first session

Being nervous is normal.

You are not expected to keep up with experienced students. Listen to the coach, work at your pace, and ask when you are unsure.

01

Say you are new

A single sentence gives the coach the context needed to adjust explanations and pace.

02

Work at your level

Focus on learning the movement correctly instead of matching another student's speed.

03

Ask questions

If a drill is unclear or uncomfortable, stop and ask the coach to show it again.

04

Keep progress simple

Finishing your first class with one or two useful corrections is a successful start.

Choose a format

Group energy or private focus.

A group class is the simplest drop-in experience. A private session gives you more time for explanation and focused correction. Neither route requires previous Muay Thai experience.

Useful sentence

What to tell the coach.

“This is my first Muay Thai class. Please show me the basics and let me know if I need to slow down.”
A simple, useful introduction

You are not expected to know Thai gym etiquette before your first class. Listen, ask when unclear, and treat the coaches, equipment, and other students with respect.

Before you train

What people ask us.

If your question is not here, send us a message. We are happy to help.

No. Gloves, hand wraps and shin guards are free to borrow at the gym, in adult and kids' sizes, with no deposit and no ID needed. Bring a water bottle and refill it free while you train.
Do I need Muay Thai experience?
No. Tell the coach that it is your first class. The aim is to learn safely at a manageable pace.
Do I need to be flexible or fit?
No. You can start from your current ability. Manage your pace and take breaks when needed.
Will I have to spar?
